Great breakfast. It is a small town gem. Someone mentioned that it was overpriced but our breakfast for two was only $18.00. If ever though town again, I will certainly stop.

While in John Day for a few days, we ate dinner here twice. The pizza on the first night was excellent and the prices were fantastic. Our server was very attentive. The second dinner we had one of the senior portions specials. Even with the smaller portions there was plenty to eat. Our steak was done to perfection, and it came with a choice of sides and perfectly cooked vegetables. We will definitely go back and highly recommend. We had the same server again and he was very friendly and attentive.

After reading Rachels review (rant) I was at first hesitant to eat here, but the other reviews were not as negative so I gave it a try. The dinner was pretty good. I had the chicken fried steak which was very nicely done. The batter was not too thick and you could tell that it wasn't one of those pre done steaks. My wife had the sirloin which she declared perfect! The dinners came with a nice salad and obviously homemade blue cheese dressing. Since we are vegetable lovers we enjoyed the very large serving of broccoli. The only criticism was that it was more overcooked than we like, but we still enjoyed it. A good solid choice in a very food limited city.

Someone recommended this restaurant to us when we asked about a good place for breakfast. He wasn't wrong. We walked in and were seated promptly and our drink order taken immediately. Our order was taken immediately by a very personable waitress. Much to my surprise and delight my egg came out perfectly cooked and just the way I like it. Believe me it is very hard to get a poached egg cooked right in a restaurant. We're from the San Francisco area of California so of course we know sourdough bread. The sourdough bread here is absolutely wonderful. I know it's not much to brag about but I found that the jam I got was very tasty. I had never heard of or tasted freezer jam, but I was very happy with it. I'm going to have to look for it at home. My companion's omelet was cooked very nicely and had a lot of tasty sausage in it. Usually you have to look for the sausage when you order omelets. All in all we were very pleased with the service, the time, and the food. I only wish we had known about this place last night so that we could have had a decent supper. When we went up to the counter I saw the desserts in the pie case. Oh my! They looked just super!!!

Food is fine, nothing special or homemade, just premade stuff you find pretty much anywhere. Service is a problem, only once have I ever had decent service, once your meal is served you are forgotten about, no refills on coffee, no asking how your meal is, don't even bring you your check after.

Food is fine, and the discount nights are worth while. But if you plan on eating in the bar, expect to wait forever and a day.

Three of us ate here...the salads were really delicious and fresh and the blue cheese dressing was yummy. The staff were friendly but not overly so and were attentive. We'll be in John Day for one more night and planned to try a different restaurant but after dinner tonight, we decided to come back tomorrow night. We looked at the kids menu and the meals come with a kids ice cream cone! I thought that was a nice touch.

Try the friend pickles, for real. They are pretty good and definitely a conversation starter. Everyone's meal looked really good and my dinner companion said hers was delicious, but my "everything" personal pizza was pretty awful. It arrived cold and looked and tasted like a bargain rate frozen pizza someone threw in a microwave. I don't recommend that, but luckily I got full on the pickles. Service was friendly. You don't have a lot of choices in John Day!

Great place to eat in John Day! Don't pass up on the chance to have huckleberries! There are also lots of cute decorating items for sale there too!

Our family went to dinner at the Outpost just last Sunday. We were pleasantly surprised. You always gamble when going to a local place when you're out of town, and this one paid off. The decor is pleasant. It's a roomy restaurant with western decor. There are plenty of seating options. Our family of 6 was at two tables that had been linked together with brackets. There were also booths and smaller tables. It was comfortable and clean, with lots to look at and take in. No getting bored while you wait for your order! Service was good, and there is an excellent range on the menu. Surely everyone in a group can find something to eat! I opted for the mushroom burger and fries, one son had a BBQ pizza, another had a burger, the oldest steak & baked potato, and my husband had a pizza with "everything", more or less. We found everything to be flavorful and the portions were satisfying. Some drank soda, others water. Our waitress brought a pitcher of soda to the table which I always find thoughtful, especially when you're dealing with kids. She also brought our little one a paper cup with a lid and straw; attention to detail like that is really appreciated. He was happy which meant we all were ;-) I enjoyed both a lemon drop and huckleberry lemon martini. They were excellent.

Cycled through town and ate here and got a veggie sandwich. My girlfriend got a cranberry salad. They were both very tasty and totaled only $15.77. The sweet potato fries were awesome too.

We were driving through Oregon, and in the city just south of John Day (Canyon City), we chatted with a couple of folks who recommended The Outpost for breakfast. When visiting places for the first time, we tend to listen to these oracles, and are not usually disappointed. Breakfast was fantastic - thick bacon, crisp hash browns, eggs cooked just the way we like them, large cups for coffee, and fresh squeezed orange juice. Friendly, attentive service, "western wood" atmosphere as someone else aptly described, and good prices made this a winner in our book.

We were in John Day on a Sunday night and our options were pretty slim. We chose this place over the Grubsteak and maybe in retrospect, that wasn't the best thing. We walked through the Cracker Barrellish gift shop entryway and found a booth we liked up towards the front. There was a waitress cleaning off a large table and we asked if just seated ourselves. Oh, no, she said, and promptly escorted us back towards the entrance. I said, "Would it be OK if we sat up front by the window," and she shook her head and told us that No, it would not be OK; in fact, it would be better if we sat at the first booth in the restaurant. There were other patrons up front, but her insistence on not letting us sit up there was very off-putting. Is that section closed? I inquired. No, she said, it would just be better if you sat here. I was not giving up -- Well, can we sit up front? She finally huffed OK and dropped us off. It was quite possibly the funniest thing a hostess has ever said. If the section had been closed, that would have been one thing, but she seemed to prefer not to be inconvenienced by our preference. Oh, the food? One cheeseburger that was cooked to the point of jerky and a toasted Club that was mediocre at best. Fries? Out of a bag, I'm sure. Next time -- we'll try the other place. We got a big laugh at our treatment -- who can take that kind of service seriously!?!

This is an okay place to go but keep your expectations low. The food is hit or miss. The only thing you can consistently expect to get is SLOW terrible service. I often feel like I am inconveniencing this establishments staff by choosing to eat there. They frequently forget orders, I have heard them talk to costumer a like some people talk to their kids, It's gotten so bad lately I haven't been back. Other reviewers ask if there are better places in town, luckily better options do exist! Try the snaffle bit or 1188 for friendly staff and consistently good food and atmosphere.

Took my family here for my daughters birthday. Waited forever for some really lousy food. This place is notoriously average at best. The local drunks love it...,avoid at all costs do not be fooled by the cool exterior

It was a slow Monday, we got there at 5pm with hardly anyone in the restaurant. They took our drink and dinner order at the same time. Took over 15 mins just to get our drinks. Dinner was over 30 minutes then they didn't even notice that they never bought out my order. They weren't apologetic at all and it was clear they completely forgot my meal as my dinner was 15 minutes behind everyone else's in our dinner party. We had to ask multiple times where it was. No offer to comp dinner and no apology. Food was ok. Menu was limited. I was just traveling thru town but I won't be back. Lastly we asked for blended margaritas and they came to the table on the rocks. Waitress was nice but not caring. We even had to ask for ketchup for our hamburgers from a table busser.

Yummy food! Great service! Comfy atmosphere. We went there for dinner not expecting much and we had such a good experience that we returned for breakfast the next morning. Don't be turned off by the touristic 'store' you walk through to get to the dining area.

Thanks to Yelp we came to Outpost for dinner. We started out at the bar where I was drinking a GIANT glass of wine while Hubby enjoyed a variety of vodka drinks. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/osEB… ) At the bar we ordered the deep fried pickle appetizer. Unlike other restaurants, they quarter their pickles lengthwise before adding the light batter and frying. Loved them! When it was time for dinner we moved from the bar to a table since the bar is slim and would not accommodate dinner plates. Hubby and I both ordered steaks which were offered with a few different sauces. Of course, I went for the blue cheese and bacon topping (yeah, yeah - bacon makes everything better). The steak was perfectly done and quite delicious. The side baked potato was large and had just the right amount of loaded toppings so as not to leave me dry at the end. The broccoli was fresh and cooked just enough to keep the flavor, but not enough to wilt. I really liked the Texas toast on the side. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/osEB… ) Hubby, on the other hand, was not as happy with his meal. He ordered the mushroom topping and when the plate came you couldn't see the meat. Now, I'm a fan of lots of sauce, but this was over the top. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/osEB… ) Where's the beef??? Hubby did not enjoy his meal at all. He said it tasted fine, it was just overpowered by all that sauce. He didn't complain about the drinks or the service though. The bartender was sweet and her service was very good. We closed the restaurant down chatting with some locals and really enjoyed our time at the Outpost.

I used to love the pizza here but not now. We ordered a Hawaiian which in the menu said "grilled pineapple slices" when we got our pizza it had diced pineapple. The sauce and crust where horrible I will not be eating pizza here again. I will say though that breakfast was good.

This place is fantastic for being out in no where. The pizza and homemade breadsticks with Alfredo dipping sauce is amazing. The service was great!

Stopped in on my way to Boise from Bend, because I just refuse to eat at Dairy Queen. I was pleasantly surprised. Great burger, juicy, crisp veggies, friendly smiles from the servers, and a clean glass of water. Strange that a restaurant has a gift store like this, but I guess every dollar counts when you have a business in such a small town. I'll stop in again.

Well, for starters, you are in John Day. According to the other reviews, this is about the best you can get. This may be true, but who knows; I won't be able to tell you because I'm certainly going to be very skeptical of putting any other food in my mouth in this town. My recommendation: don't eat, just drink. Heavily. Heavily enough to not remember the food, if you made the mistake of eating any, or even better, to help make it easier to get it out of your system. Maybe it will be more palatable coming up. Quite seriously, I am so grossed out that I don't even know where to start. I see a lot of people gave it four stars. And, everyone has their preferences, I realize, and that's understandable. But this review is not for those people. I am writing this for those of you who have even the remotest idea of what decent food is. I don't know what finds you in John Day- perhaps you took a scenic detour on your way north from San Francisco to Walla Walla. Perhaps you live in Portland just thought you'd explore eastern Oregon. It is beautiful country, it's true. But, bring your own food. And, don't be fooled by the "organic mixed greens" they offer at this place. What they mean is "we mixed some cabbage and iceberg lettuce together." I have absolutely no idea when the last time was that I might have possibly come across a meal this disgusting. I feel like I could just go on and on here, ranting about how awful it is, but I will just have to cut myself off. I guess the key here is to remember to follow the recommendations of people who have similar tastes to you. If you aren't the type who prefers food so processed that it had to be re-molded into something that looks remotely food-shaped, then this place isn't for you.

We were on our way to a fire lookout 20 miles south of town and needed a place to get a very quick and decent dinner before the sunset. The Outpost stepped up to the task. My wife and I both got salads. She got something with a lot of cranberries in it and huckleberry dressing while I had the chipotle chicken salad. In Portland, I would consider them to have been above average but not awesome. However, given the culinary options in John Day, I will rate them pretty high. Service was very nice and super fast. Our table (and the whole place in general) was very clean. Beer selection had something for everyone, ranging from your typical mass produced garbage to Terminal Gravity and Deschutes selections. Prices were very reasonable.

I expected far worse. Aside from the country bumpkin feel, the food turned out to be good, and moderately fresh. It was overpriced, but when you're in the middle of nowhere, the only thing that is "cheap" is the meat, which was priced better. The waitresses were high school students, and seemed to be making an effort, which was good enough for me. Also boasts the only decent lounge in town, but that's not saying much.

Fun western atmosphere, good basic food at a reasonable price. Our waiter, Adam was a delight. Try the peanut butter pie.

I am basing this review on its location. It was good pizza and salad. If you are familiar with Papa Murphy's pizza, it closely resembles it. Especially the texture of the crust. Overall our server was really nice and attentive and I would recommend it to anyone coming to the area.

Great beer on tap. Stephanie kept the pale ales coming while I enjoyed happy hour prices on a hearty burger and fries. The fried pickles looked like zucchini but went down like gerkins of mass destruction. Large TVs in the lounge make for good sports viewing. I watched the MNF game (Patriots/Dolphins) here instead of alone in my room at the Dreamer's Lodge. If I lived in John Day I'd be an Outpost barfly. And I would grow a beard.

Outpost! The best in JD! Snaffle Bit is special but will give you heartburn--Outpost is the place to be. Everything on the menu is good. I repeat, everything on the menu is good. The soup is different every day and totally rocks. The best I ever had was spinach tortellini soup that was a lot like custard, but they haven't brought it back since the one time I got to eat it. The gooey chocolate cake sitting on the check out stand? It looks like it was made by someone's grandma because it was. I asked. Eat it. It is globby and delicious. If you don't know what to order go with a cinnamon roll and bacon for breakfast, or a Blue Moon or Chicken Ranch burger for lunch. Fish and chips or steak for dinner, of course. And order the raspberry lemonade! Note to people who like to schmooze with servers--don't waste your breath here. The servers are all totally aloof and grumpy. It is worth it for the food, I promise, and the owners are sweet. *Tears* I really miss Outpost as my lunch locale.

It's surprisingly good, considering how remote the location. The cranberry salad with chicken is excellent (I ate it three times in a week) and they really should bottle the huckleberry dressing for sale in their gift shop, it is SO good (and made on site). The service can be a bit slow but seriously - you're in John Day. Where exactly do you need to rush off to?

Great food, a good list of microbrews and the service was great too. I was very impressed. Try the fried pickles - it sounds strange but it works and they are very good. We will definitely eat here again next time we are in John Day, this was a great find!

I had lunch there with my husband and my mother in law, we all thought the food was very good. I had a calzone and I enjoyed it. The onion rings were crispy and very good. The chicken sandwiches my husband and mother in law had looked very good. We ate late enough in the day that we did not have dinner that night. But I will say you get your moneys worth of food. I brought home half of my calzone and I plan on having it for leftovers. We are already telling ourselves we will be going back next time we are up that way.

another stop during our visit to Canyon City. i ate here 3 times in 2 days the food was so good. the mozzarella sticks were the best i've ever had, the turkey avo on focaccia was pure bliss, and that pitcher of wildberry margarita was the cherry on top. huckleberries and marion berries make it a seasonal treat and definitely well worth the wait. don't feel like eating but want to grab a drink? check out the full bar and pull up a stool.

John Day is in the middle of nowhere, and The Outpost is the best place in town to eat. Pleasant "Western wood" atmosphere, standard menu items well made, pleasant staff (if a bit amateurish), and good draft micro brew beer. Lots of space between tables, and local history info galore to read while you wait for your dinner. Not a restaurant I would drive out of my way to eat at, but if you are in John Day, this is the place to go. There is more on the menu, but my advice is to stick to burgers and steaks.

What a great breakfast! The server was super nice and have never seen another server EVER fill up my boyfriends coffee as much as she did. Very clean and yummy! Cute stuff to buy up by the front desk. Perfect start to our day at the river.
